About the Clifton College Sports Courses

About Us 2014

Clifton College is one of the UK’s leading independent schools, with over 150 years of history and tradition. Clifton College is particularly renowned for its sporting excellence across a range of sports, for both boys and girls. The school also has an unrivalled reputation for its pastoral care and welfare of pupils. Set in the beautiful suburb of Clifton, the school offers ideal surroundings and excellent facilities in which to develop your skills in your chosen sport.

Our philosophy at Clifton College is to run high-quality sports courses, delivered by highly-qualified, enthusiastic and inspirational coaches. We are proud to have developed partnerships with some leading sporting organisations over the years, including Somerset CCC, O2 Rugbyclass, and Manchester United Soccer Schools. By working alongside these great organisations, we can ensure that you will be learning from the very best coaches in the business.

Our very own Head of Girls’ Hockey, Louise Catchpole, will once again be delivering the biggest and best Girls’ Hockey Courses in the South-West! She has coached the school teams to great success over recent years – the school have been County champions for 6 consecutive years, with countless players representing a variety of England teams. Louise herself has played International Hockey, played Premier League for 10 years, along with being a fully-qualified level 3 coach. She is also the current coach of the West of England U15 squad.

Our Boys Hockey Courses are delivered by Tim Martin, the Clifton College Preparatory School hockey coach. Tim has years of experience coaching school teams, as well as still playing regularly himself, so he knows how to get the best out of boys wishing to progress in their hockey careers.

We will also have Matt Salter, now a full-time Clifton College Rugby Coach, to work with us to deliver our Boys Rugby Courses. With years of professional playing experience at the highest level, our team of coaches are in a position to show boys how to achieve your maximum potential. We are confident that our Rugby Courses will go from strength to strength with their years of experience delivering high quality sports courses.

Clifton College also have their very own team of former professional cricketers putting the boys through their paces during the Easter holidays. All courses will be led by Jim Williams, with assistance from James Averis and Reggie Williams (availability permitting). All the coaches have first-hand experience in the life of professional cricketers, and can pass on their knowledge to the students. We are certain that this link will produce the best courses we have ever run, both on and off the field!

When you attend our Sports Courses, you will develop your skills, as well as learning new ones, and you will make lots of new friends, whilst staying at one of the UK’s leading independent schools. Our priority is to ensure that you have a fantastic time with us, in a safe, friendly and stimulating environment. During residential courses, all students will have the opportunity to relax in the wonderful surroundings of Clifton College and enjoy all the facilities the school has on offer, including a swimming pool, fully-equipped gym facility, and cyber café.

What our students & parents say…

Would you please pass our thanks to all the teachers and support staff on the hockey course. Catherine thoroughly enjoyed the course and had a marvellous time. She is set for the up and coming hockey season and has made some new friends into the bargain. I hope all involved have the chance for a rest.
Mrs Cooke
Brad, just to say that Cameron enjoyed the rugby week enormously. He has had a couple of years out of rugby but thoroughly enjoyed returning to it. It was an excellent course (as was the hockey) and he is keen to do the next one. Well done for running two excellent courses!

At Clifton College we have House Staff with experience in looking after the welfare of young people in a residential setting. We will make sure your son or daughter is introduced to others on the course when they arrive, and we can arrange for them to share a room with others if you would like (prior notice needed). We will make sure that they are interacting with others on the course, both in the house and whilst they are being coached, and that they are eating properly at breakfast, lunch & dinner!

Everyone who attends the Sports Courses will leave us with a fully detailed Player Report from the coaches, detailing what they have been doing during the week, and aspects on which they need to work to improve their game.

Most of our coaches who deliver our courses here at Clifton College have experience as professionals at some of the highest levels of their sport. We have former England International hockey players, former Premiership rugby players, and former County cricketers. All of our head coaches are fully supported by talented and qualified coaching teams, allowing your children to learn from the very best.

All attendees will first of all be placed in age appropriate groups upon their arrival within their respective sports. All attendees will then be monitored and placed in groups suitable to their abilities, judged by the coaching team, with the aim of challenging them throughout the week.

We will have a variety of activities on each evening, including Cyber Cafe time, games competitions, and the oppotunity to relax with your new friends. Obviously there is a need for rest after such an intensive day of coaching, and the coaches will insist that you are ‘taking it easy’ to save yourself for the next day! We will have seminars with professional Nutritionists, advising you on how best to manage your diet, and also professional Physiotherapists, giving you advice on how to warm-up and warm-down properly to help you avoid those sprains & strains!
